![]() For TTL, I had called for everyone to create something, but I realized that I hadn’t created anything myself. And that’s why we decided to dish out an April Fool’s teaser without telling anyone. “Don’t think, FEEL!” That’s the serial experiments lain way. “What? I watched it but I still don’t get it,” you say? That’s just how it is. If I had created lain now, I would’ve probably created it like how I did this teaser. Rather, the teaser is like a patch update to the work that I had originally created. But there aren’t any spoilers or anything for the anime or game. This time around, I based the teaser on the theme of how lain came into existence. So at the time, when I was working with Tomokazu Tokoro and Junji Nakahara on a dating sim game called Noël, my sane self had no choice but to do it the hard way and hash out a patchwork of conversation responses that could hopefully simulate a real conversation for the player. Naturally, I couldn’t even begin to imagine what chat AI technology has evolved into today. Contrary to what one may think, I was one of the sane ones. If anyone (other than someone in that field) seriously thought we could one day attain what we have now, they would’ve been quite cringey to be around. ![]() But, even if computational and processing power were to improve exponentially, at the time, something like a usable chat AI was just a madman’s pipe dream. Back in the day, when I was still drafting up ideas for lain, the world was of course aware of Moore’s Law. It was evolving at such a fast pace that I could barely keep up with the news. Sorry for the disappointment, but there is nothing going on.Īs for the teaser video, the idea for its story started when AI was literally spitting out amazing creations one after another, from illustrations/pictures to videos, and with such efficiency. So, I apologize if our April Fool’s day teaser video gave you the impression that something was about to begin. I have no intention of making a continuation, a new "serial experiments lain," under my own name, and I don't think it was that kind of story to begin with. Now that Ryutaro Nakamura, who was at the core of this project, is no longer here with us in this world, I have no intention of continuing the project. It’s thanks to their efforts that serial experiments lain became interesting. Speaking of lain’s creation, serial experiments lain started off as just an amateurish draft of mine, but the reason why this work has become so beloved is thanks to the superb animation staff, including director Ryutaro Nakamura, Chiaki Konaka, Yoshitoshi Abe, Junji Nakahara, Tomokazu Tokoro, and Takahiro Kishida. But, all of that is over now, for I have the power of Chat GPT (hah). My heart was always pounding, my PowerBook G4 was always overheating, and art master Abe would often laugh at me as I ran around frantically. Isn’t that just amazing?! At the time when I was working on lain, I felt so pressured and stressed. In the real world, on the Wire, “they” begin to move. Inevitably, those who wish to control and manipulate the Network for profit and ambition appear. Not only do those on the Network create personas for themselves that are different from their real-world personalities, but now we are even seeing the emergence of a new “race” that exists only in the Network world. ![]() ![]() The constant inflow of data fattens up the already expanding Network of information. For these girls, their NAVI is an indispensable means of connecting with friends, sharing gossip, and talking about the latest trends. Using their mobile NAVI is as instinctive and second-nature to girls in this future as hanging out in Shibuya or shopping for cute trinkets. It is an age in which it is a given to communicate with others digitally, through a “Network.” It is an age in which people unconsciously shop for “assurance” by "connecting" with others through NAVI. ![]() The information terminal “NAVI” has become as widespread and influential a medium as television. The setting is Tokyo, in a somewhat distant future. ![]()
